Future Proof

International Scientific Archives Conference

"Future Proof" is a series of international conferences on the archives of contemporary science. Historians and archivists from various countries present and discuss issues related to the acquisition, preservation, classification and dissemination of the documentary legacy of contemporary science: from the personal collection of scientific records to digital ongoing research on major international laboratories. This heritage is an essential part of scientific culture and has an increasingly important role in the current debate on science in society. Moreover, the need to ensure the preservation and access to a growing number of scientific data integrates archival practices in the management of science and its communication.

For these reasons, scientific institutions in different countries pay particular attention to their archives, including the recent past. This is the case of national academies, including the British Royal Society and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences; major scientific facilities such as the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford (SLAC); science museums like the Natural History Museum in London and the Deutsches Museum in Munich; university archives; institutions specializing in the history of medicine and medical records, such as the British Wellcome Library; and international institutions like the International Council on Archives (ICA). Most of these institutions have participated in this conference series.
