José Royo y Gómez (Castellò de la Plana, Valencia, 1895 - Caracas, Venezuela 1961). He earned a doctorate in Natural Sciences from the Central University of Madrid. He worked at the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Madrid (MNCN), where he formed the Ignacio Bolívar school. During the Spanish Civil War he was charged with moving, installing and launching the MNCN laboratories in Valencia and Barcelona. He went into exile in Colombia and Venezuela. He moved to Bogotá, where he worked at the National Geological Service and became prominent as a field geologist and palaeontologist and as the planner, administrator and founder of the National Geology Museum of Colombia. He was a Full Professor at the National University of Colombia and the Ethnographic Institute of Bogotá. In 1951 he moved to Caracas, where he continued to work as a scholar and also continued his activity in biostratigraphy and museology.
