Additional information:

The Escola Industrial Barcelonesa (Barcelona Industrial School) was made up of the scientific and technical schools that had been launched under the aegis of the Board of Trade since the early 19th century. The school offered a variety of study programmes: elementary industrial, higher industrial, mercantile, theory and practice of textiles, and nautical. In 1971, with the new name of the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria Industrial de Barcelona (Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona, ETSEIB) it joined the Polytechnic University of Barcelona (UPC), the immediate forerunner of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). In the mid-20th century, a need was perceived in the industrial and academic worlds of Catalonia to expand, deepen and update applied science and engineering programmes as an engine of economic development. Thus, a broad, unstructured system of aids and grants for research was gestated, the cornerstone of subsequent university-enterprise relations in the framework of research, both national and international. Likewise, administrations and foundations also participated. Worth noting is the prominent role of American aid during the Cold War period.
