The Municipal Microbiology Laboratory of Barcelona, created in 1887, was a pioneering institution internationally. It was the initiative of Doctor Jaume Ferran i Clua, discoverer along with Innocent Paulí of the cholera vaccine, the first artificial vaccines for humans in 1884. The Barcelona laboratory was initially designed to combat rabies, following Pasteur’s procedures. It later continued to conduct a variety of microbiology studies and water and food analyses and to prepare vaccines and serums to combat smallpox and other diseases.
