Josep Antoni Barraquer i Roviralta (Barcelona, 1852-1924). He was an ophthalmologist with a Bachelor’s from the University of Barcelona and a PhD from Madrid. He pursued further studies in Paris. He was Full Professor of Ophthalmology in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona. He conducted innumerable studies on eye pathologies, many of which ranked among the leading ophthalmology texts in the world at the time. He conducted numerous histopathological studies and also worked on eye morphology. He made noteworthy contributions to the study of topographic anatomy. In 1903 he founded the Ophthalmology Society of Barcelona. He edited two specialised journals: Boletín de la Clínica Oftalmológica del Hospital de la Santa Cruz (Bulletin of the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Santa Cruz Hospital) and Oftalmología (Ophthalmology).
