Lluís Sayé i Sempere (Barcelona, 1888 - 1975). He earned a Bachelor’s in Medicine from the University of Barcelona in 1911 and a doctorate in 1912. He was an expert in tuberculosis and appointed director of the recently-created Social Assistance Service for Tuberculosis Sufferers, whose headquarters was the Anti-Tuberculosis Dispensary of Barcelona. From the start, the purpose of this dispensary was both clinical, with the care and direct treatment of tuberculosis sufferers, and prophylactic, fostering the tuberculosis vaccine as a means of preventing the disease. It was also a documentation and research centre on the disease, as well as a centre where future medical specialists were educated and trained.
