(Source: Fons Especials de la Biblioteca UdG) PhD in sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. After working in Hamburg, Germany, with Professor Wilhelm Blaschke, which was introduced in integral geometry, returned to Spain in 1936 and is mobilized to the front. At the end of the war went into exile in France, where he is taken prisoner and interned in a concentration camp. On his departure, the mathematician Julio Rey invited him to visit Argentina, where he lives since 1939. Get a university teaching position in Rosario, Santa Fe province, creating the Institute of Mathematics, University of Litoral, directed by Beppo Levi, Santalócom with a deputy. Create and promote the scientific journal Notae Mathematicae.

The years 1948 and 1949 happens to Princeton with a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation. Back in Argentina, joined the University of La Plata. In 1957 he was appointed professor of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires. Received several awards for his public career: First National Prize of Culture (1954), winner of the Scientific Society of Argentina (1959) and joined the Academy of Natural Sciences (1960). Also in Spain recognized its merits Academician of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences in Madrid (1955), academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts (1970), Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Catalonia (1977), Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific Research (1983), Narcissus Monturiol Medal of Science and Technology of the Government of Catalonia (1984), Doctor Honoris Causa from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1986), Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Seville (1990), awarded the medal of the University of Valencia (1993) and St George Cross of the Generalitat of Catalonia (1994). The University of Girona created on 27 July 2000 Chair Santaló.

In their classes appeal to more geometric intuition that the formalism, in contrast to the dominant currents at that time. Many of his ideas on education are contained in the book Mathematics education today, Ed. Teide, 1975.
